Karahayit in brief
Karahayıt, spelled Karahayit in many guides, lies about 5 km from Pamukkale. It is best known for the Red Spring, where rust-red and orange deposits cover the rock. The colour comes from mineral oxides, and iron oxide is behind the reddish brown. This is the opposite of the white terraces, which are calcium carbonate.
The spring water is about 58 °C all year at the source. That is a spring temperature, not the temperature in any hotel pool. The village also has several thermal hotels with indoor and outdoor thermal pools. A stay in Karahayit does not include entry to Hierapolis or swimming in the Antique Pool. For ideas on combining a hotel with guided trips, see Pamukkale tours.

What you see at the Red Spring
Colour, heat and what to expect.
The colour
The deposits at the Red Spring are rust red and orange. They form where hot spring water carries minerals out onto the rock. The colour is a mineral effect, not paint or dye.
The heat
At about 58 °C the water at the outlet is very hot. Do not put your hands in it, and do not bathe in or drink from the outlet unless a sign clearly allows it.
Entry and hours
Ask your hotel or check at the spring whether there is an entry fee and what the hours are, before you plan a trip around it.
No health promises
This guide makes no health claims for the water. If you have a health condition, ask a doctor before you use hot thermal pools.

Karahayit or the village of Pamukkale?
Most visitors choose between the village at the foot of the terraces and Karahayit. The village is the better base if you want to be close to the footpath entrance, although how far a hotel is from the gate depends on the exact address. Karahayit is a short ride away and is the choice for a hotel with thermal pools.
| Pamukkale village | Karahayit | |
|---|---|---|
| Distance to the terraces | At the foot of the slope | About 5 km |
| Known for | Footpath entrance, pond | Red Spring, thermal hotels |
| Thermal pools at the hotel | – | Several hotels have indoor and outdoor pools |
| Transfers | Balloon pick-ups from here | Balloon pick-ups from here |
For most visitors, the village is the simpler base for a first visit, and Karahayit suits a stay built around a thermal hotel. The full comparison is on the where to stay page.

Thermal hotels in Karahayit
What to ask before you book.
The pools
Several hotels in Karahayit have indoor and outdoor thermal pools. That tells you about the character of the village, not about the quality of any one hotel. Pool temperatures differ from the 58 °C at the spring, so ask what the pool you will use is like.
Day guests
Whether people who do not stay in a hotel can use its pool is up to each hotel. Ask first, and do not assume that it is free.
Your day at the terraces
A hotel stay and a visit to the terraces are two separate things. Add the entry ticket and, if you want to swim among the ruins, the extra fee for the Antique Pool. The tickets page has the 2026 prices.
